HySA Catalysis Competence Centre in South Africa
The Research and Technology Development (R&TD) Manager: Fuel Cell & Electrolyser will be based in Cape Town
on a 5-year contract at the University of Cape Town. The individual will provide technical leadership and expertise
around all relevant projects in the HySA Catalysis Competence Centre’s portfolio and establish and maintain worldclass
R&D processes in the laboratories. As the technical expert, he/she will ensure technology know-how transfer
to the project team members in the centre hub and its spokes. He/she will ensure a vibrant postgraduate student
body in the field of fuel cell and electrolyser.
Key responsibilities:
• Technical leadership of the fuel cell and electrolyser teams incorporating a bold and innovative vision for the
next 5 years for the Centre and clearly communicating this vision to all stakeholders.
• Provide technical guidance to the project teams in all relevant projects.
• Establish and maintain world-class R&D in the centre hub and its spokes.
• Transfer internationally recognised knowledge, skills and expertise to the local HySA community and provide
mentorship to the HySA community.
• Develop comprehensive local competence with a view to eventually establishing a domestic manufacturing base
in South Africa.
• Include significant South African innovations and ensure the technologies evolve from technology readiness
levels, TRL 1 (concept) through TRL 6 (lab prototype) and carry out technoeconomic analysis on the most
promising technologies.
• Assist in the business planning, the budgeting process, and technical reporting requirements of all relevant

notably membrane electrode assembly (MEA) technology but preferably everything from catalyst up to and
including stack design and development. Experience in electrolyser MEA and/or catalyst development is an

least 5 years. He/she would ideally have a MSc or preferably a PhD in Engineering or related discipline or 10
years relevant experience after a BSc.
• The individual must have exceptional communication skills to effectively lead a diverse technical team and to
communicate with a variety of stakeholders from government, institutions and companies.
• The successful incumbent will be not only technically incisive but must show evidence for commercially oriented
technology development responding to industrial drivers for commercialisation.
