Applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons are invited for the above post, effective 1 December
or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a permanent position.
The incumbent must be a mature, energetic, driven, strongly disciplined individual, able to deal with multiple,
simultaneous demands in a high-pressure environment. He/she will be in charge of the management functions of
the Electronics workshop, will advise staff and students on the best approach to implement instrumentation
systems and IT matters and will develop novel systems related to the research activities within the Department.
The incumbent must have excellent communication, inter-personal skills and planning skills with good
understanding of and experience in managing a multi-user workshop environment.
Minimum requirements:
 A National Diploma in Electrical Engineering with 6 years’ experience in a multi-user laboratory, preferably
with a significant laboratory management record, OR a BSc Engineering degree with at least 3 years’
experience in a multi-user laboratory environment, preferably with a significant laboratory management record
 Proven ability to conceptualize, develop and implement instrumentation and control systems.
 Familiarity with an electronic CAD system such as KiCad, Altium, Eagle
 Experience with devices such as the Arduino, Rasberry Pi and micro-controllers
 Experience with LabView or sufficient programming experience to learn these skills
 Manage the departmental IT infrastructure
 Write detailed documentation of projects
 Provide support for experiential learning facility
 Support post-graduate students with respect to instrumentation and systems
 Support researchers by designing and implementing the required electronic systems
 Communicate effectively with all users of the department
 Manage the workshop
The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R420 032 and R494 154.
